The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) called on local officials to pass an ordinance aiming to “retrofit” buildings and other structures in the city.
Retrofitting refers to the inspection of structures in an effort to evaluate their current state against earthquakes and other forms of calamities.
“We must be concerned about this as the Philippines, as a whole, is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire,” Engr. Rainier Amilbahar, Phivolcs–Central Mindanao seismic station chief, said.
The “Ring of Fire” is a mapped fault line along the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have occurred.
“There is no substitute for being always ready against occurrences of natural disasters,” Amilbahar stressed during Tuesday’s disaster response inter-agency seminar on Strategic Communication Planning Workshop & Laymanizing of Effective Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Materials held at Alnor Hotel. City officials have yet to respond to Amilbahar’s request. (PNA) LAP/BS/NYP
