Greenhouses worth PHP19 million will be constructed next week in Barangay Aningalan in the municipality of San Remigio for the cultivation of high value crops and cut flowers.

In an interview Tuesday, San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. said the seven greenhouses will be constructed in a one-hectare lot of the village.

The project is funded by the Department of Agriculture (DA).

“We expect the construction of the greenhouses to already start next week because the fund is already there and the markings have already been done,” he said.

Office of Provincial Agriculturist head Nicolasito Calawag said the greenhouses would be a “big help” for the people of San Remigio, particularly those living in the upland village of Aningalan.

Aningalan has a cool climate, which is conducive for the production of high value crops and cut flowers.

“With the greenhouses, the local people would be able to produce off season crops and good quality cut flowers,” Calawag said in a separate interview.

Aningalan residents are already producing cabbage, broccoli, and other high value crops and cut flowers. With the greenhouses and the transfer of technology by the DA, they would be able to produce more, he added.

“Initially, we are also looking into supplying the local market because the high-value crops and cut flowers being sold here are still from Baguio, Metro Manila, and Cebu,” he said.

Calawag said the vegetable and flower vendors in Antique province would be able to source out their supply locally with the establishment of the greenhouses.

“The vendors could save some amount because they won’t be paying high transportation cost(s) for their supply will only come from San Remigio,” he added.

His office is arranging for the groundbreaking of the greenhouses within this week. (PNA)
