Fill bellies instead of bins!
Slow Food Philippines, together with Slow Food Youth Network and Enderun Colleges, along with 40 other countries, will simultaneously hold the World Disco Soup Day on April 28. In a nutshell, it’s a pop-up disco party where you eat and dance TO FIGHT FOOD WASTE!
From Manila to Uganda, Brazil to the Netherlands, like-minded people will join forces on this day to collect food that would have otherwise been thrown into the bin; cutting and chopping with gusto, and cooking a Protest Soup, as we fight food waste with a dance.
Throughout the food system, there is an enormous amount of perfectly good food being wasted: vegetables left to rot in the fields, “ugly” food discarded by supermarkets, rejected ”imperfect” produce, or consumers not using what they buy. Disco Soup aims to raise awareness of this global problem by showing that all this “waste” is actually perfectly edible. All it requires is a little imagination, a bit of chopping, peeling and cooking, and a whole lot of dancing!
Supported by the Department of Agriculture, our passionate farmers, some of Philippines’ rock star chefs, and countless volunteers, we will also bring together students, teachers, seniors, cooks, and food activists in a gastronomic disco to highlight the fact that food waste is a big issue and we need to take concrete action.
To be held at The Tent of Enderun Colleges at the Fort from 4pm onwards, everyone is invited to come and help chop and cook, or just learn more about our current food system and find ways to help change it. The preparation and cooking will be guided by respected and committed chefs who promise to lend their voices against food waste: Margarita Fores, Asia’s Best Female Chef, Robby Goco, Tatung Sarthou, Waya Araos Wijangco, Nino Laus, Jonas Ng, Jac Laudico, Kalel Chan and Jam Melchor. There will also be DJs, singers, artists, poets, and an outdoor movie. Soup and meals prepared will feed the nearby community from Barangay Pinagkaisahan in Taguig, as well as volunteers and supporters who all believe in conscious consumption, our way of saying we do not waste food, and we celebrate when we save food.
Fight food waste the fun way! Bring your cutlery, your knives, peelers, graters, aprons, and your dancing shoes!
