Donatella Versace, head of the Italian designer label Versace, says the major fashion brand is going fur-free. The creative director believes that fur should no longer be considered a staple in the world of high fashion.
“Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.”
Donatella stated that in an interview with Luke Leitch of The Economist’s 1843 magazine. Up until now, Versace has included fur in many of its designs. Donatella’s revelation is a breath of fresh air, especially for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA.
“PETA led runway disruptions, protests, and a 2006 ad blitz at a time when Versace was synonymous with fur, so this news is most welcome. Donatella’s realization that it’s wrong to bludgeon and electrocute animals for fur is a major turning point in the campaign for compassionate fashion, and PETA looks forward to seeing a leather-free Versace.”
The animal rights’ group Senior VP Dan Matthews said this on a statement, expressing his praise to the Italian design brand for its decision. Versace has long been a symbol of excess, luxury, and glamour, and even was known to have fur as part of its designs for years now.
Versace follows in the footsteps of Gucci and Michael Kors who have both recently pledged to go fur-free. Furla, the Italian accessories company, also vowed on Wednesday to go fur-free starting with its cruise 2019 collection. In the past few decades, many other brands, including Tommy Hilfiger, the Net-A-Porter Group, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and, of course, Stella McCartney, have all also pledged to stop using fur.
