Geothermal leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) participated in the two-day Climate Challenge Summit, which was organized by the provincial government of Sorsogon and Climate Reality Philippines. Recognizing the province’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change, the summit was held to raise awareness among Sorsoganons the threats of climate change and how everyone can be empowered to save our future. The event is held on March 5-6, 2019 in Sorsogon State University’s Social Hall.
The event kicked off with a ceremonial signing by Gov. Robert Lee Rodrigueza, Sorsogon City Mayor Sally Lee, and EDC Corporate Social Responsibility Head Atty. Allan Barcena of the Executive Order 001-2019, which declares March 5th as the annual Geothermal Energy Day in the province. The EO recognizes geothermal energy as the “pioneer renewable energy resource in the Philippines” which can provide a clean and reliable baseload power. Sorsogon is a province rich in geothermal resource, and it is host to EDC’s 140-MW Bacon-Manito (Bacman) Geothermal Project, which supplies power to the Luzon Grid.
The City of Sorsogon, through Mayor Sally Lee, has signed a manifesto of support for the province’s Geothermal Energy Day declaration.
Atty. Allan Barcena represented EDC and talked about how we are running out of time, with climate change catching up to us, and we must act quickly if we want to have a livable future.
“We need to limit our temperature rise to two degrees Celsius, and that’s our best-case scenario. If we reach a five-degree increase, climate scientists say this will usher in the end of human civilization,” Barcena shares in his message. “This realization led us to a brace decision to not invest in coal and provide nothing but clean, renewable, and reliable power for our future. Geothermal energy is the holy grail of RE technologies. Properly managed, it can supply clean and uninterrupted power – day or night, rain or shine.”
The active participation of different sectors have encouraged a healthy and active discussion on what steps the province can take to push for a sustainable future and how to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The province of Sorsogon was awarded the Allen S. Quimpo Climate Leadership for Governance Memorial Award during the 2018 Climate Reality Leadership Awards due the province’s efforts to respond to the urgency of climate change. In 2017, the province declared itself off-limits to coal power through the Provincial Resolution 323-2017, citing the hazardous effects of coal to both the environment and to its residents’ health.
EDC is one of the world’s largest geothermal producers and the country’s leading renewable energy company with an installed capacity of 1,471.8MW. For over 40 years, EDC has been implementing comprehensive environmental management programs that enhance the ecosystem and corporate social responsibility programs that ensure inclusive growth for its partner communities.
The province of Sorsogon declares March 5th as the annual Geothermal Energy Day in the province through EO 001-2019. The EO recognizes geothermal energy as a pioneer renewable energy source, which the province has in abundance. The city of Sorsogon also shows support for the EO through a manifesto. Present during the ceremonial EO signing during the Climate Challenge Summit held last March 5th in Sorsogon State University are (from left to right) Atty. Allan V. EDC Corporate Social Responsibility Head Atty. Allan V. Barcena spoke during the Climate Challenge Summit, encouraging the participants from different sectors to join the fight against climate change and to help secure a low-carbon future.
