The Calamba City Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Sports Development Office (CCASDO) officially launched the activity highlights for this year’s “Buhayani Festival” which will be held until the National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s birth anniversary on June 19.
The kick-off rites of the Buhayani Festival which showcases “Buhay ng Bayani, Buhay na Bayani (the life of a hero, a living hero) coincides with Calamba’s 16th Cityhood Anniversary celebration on Thursday at the City Hall atrium.
In an interview with the PNA, Noemi Talatala, CCASDO head said the festival includes the art painting competition on Rizal’s life and works where they initially invited Laguna towns and cities during the National Art Month last February.
Talatala said the Laguna LGUs could depict Rizal as a versatile artist, doctor, writer, sportsman, polyglot and other historical and biographical aspects of the national hero through art painting.
The “Buhayani Festival” was conceived on the initiative of Mayor Justin Marc SB Chipeco and crafted as a City Ordinance 575 in June 2015 in a bid to annually feature several colorful activities that advocate Rizal’s heroism, inherent spirit of heroism and values of Calambeños, and promote the vibrant cultural heritage and rich history of the city.
Mayor Chipeco lauded the “Buhayani Festival” organizers and participants for landing as first and second runner-up honors as “Best Festival Event” despite its only three-year stage when pitted against all other long-time festival contenders in the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) and Department of Tourism award-giving bodies.
The city tourism and cultural affairs office has lined up several activities throughout the 120 days until Rizal’s birthday festivities with the “Baile de Gala”; Sayaw-Indak; Gawad Buhayani; Buhayani Film Festival;
Buhayani Float; Trade Fair;“Hawig-Rizal” or Rizal look-alike tilt; Biggest Delegation in Rizal Costume; Grand Parade and the Filipinas FJ Summit slated for April 29 to 30.
The Gawad Buhayani is an outstanding award conferred on Calambeños who have shown excellence in their chosen field of expertise and disciplines as the living embodiment of the values, ideals and patriotism of Rizal.
The Buhayani Festival proper is slated from June 12 during the country’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day and culminates on June 19 in time for Rizal’s birth anniversary celebration. (PNA)
