Sea turtles named after Labor Secretary Silvestre “Bebot” Bello and Senator Loren Legarda were released in the Lamawan Pony Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Barangay Funda-Dalipe, San Jose de Buenavista Tuesday morning.
The sea turtles “Bebot” and “Loren” are rehabilitated wild marine turtles and did not undergo captive breeding.
San Jose de Buenavista Mayor Elmer Untaran, who invited both Bello and Legarda, said there are a lot of sea turtles in the area.
The 6.5-hectare Lamawan Pony Marine Protected Area (MPA) also hosts a variety of fish, stingrays, and lobsters.
The two guests were the ones who released their namesakes.
“We prohibit the small fishermen from fishing or intruding in the area for it serves as their habitat,” Untaran said.
The area was declared as MPA about ten years ago by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources after one of its scuba divers found corals that serve as habitat for marine life about 3 kms. from the coastline.
“The local government unit of San Jose de Buenavista has hired a person to maintain the area since then,” the mayor said.
Untaran also said they envision the area to become an eco-tourism spot.
“People from as far as San Remigio and Sibalom could come to enjoy swimming,” he said. (PNA)
